Where to Place Security Cameras at Home: The Complete 2026 Placement Guide

Why Placement Beats Camera Quality

A $200 camera mounted incorrectly provides worse security than a $50 camera placed well. The most common mistakes — mounting too high, too wide an angle, wrong direction relative to the sun, or in locations that miss actual entry points — all reduce the footage's usefulness for identification regardless of resolution. This guide covers optimal placement for every camera position in a standard home.

The Four Priority Zones

Before mounting a single camera, map your home's four priority zones. Statistically, these account for 90%+ of home intrusion entry points.

Zone 1 — Front door: 34% of home break-ins use the front door. This is your highest-priority camera location.

Zone 2 — Back door and sliding doors: 22% of entries. Second priority.

Zone 3 — Garage: 9% of entries, but the garage is also where expensive tools and vehicles are stored. Third priority.

Zone 4 — Ground-floor windows: 23% of entries, spread across multiple windows. A wide-angle camera covering multiple windows from a corner position is more efficient than individual window cameras.

Front Door Placement

Optimal height: 7-9 feet off the ground. Lower than this and the camera is easy to grab and rotate; higher than this and the angle loses facial detail. At 7-9 feet with a 120-degree or narrower field of view angled downward at roughly 15-25 degrees, you'll capture faces clearly as visitors approach.

Aim point: The camera should capture the area where a person would stand when at the door — typically 3-5 feet from the door. Do not aim the camera at the door itself (you'll see the back of people's heads as they knock). Aim slightly in front of the door at approach path height.

Sun consideration: If your front door faces east, morning sun will cause lens flare during morning hours. West-facing doors will have afternoon flare issues. Mount the camera with the lens in shade if possible, or use a camera with effective HDR processing.

Doorbell cameras handle this placement automatically and are the easiest solution for front door coverage. Video doorbells mount at an existing doorbell location (typically 4-5 feet high) with a wide angle — less ideal for face identification than a higher mount, but convenient and covers the door area effectively.

Driveway and Garage

For driveways, mount the camera 8-10 feet high on a corner of the garage or house, angled across the driveway at the point where vehicles stop. Do not aim the camera parallel to the direction vehicles travel — you'll capture the side of vehicles rather than faces and license plates.

License plate capture requires specific setup: camera height 3-4 feet off the ground at the entry point, angled toward plate height as vehicles enter. A general driveway camera and a dedicated license plate camera serve different purposes — don't expect one to do both well.

Garage interior: one camera mounted high on the back wall of the garage looking toward the garage door. This captures anyone entering, the vehicle interior, and tool storage areas.

Back Yard and Side Yards

Back yards are harder to cover efficiently because of their size. For a standard rectangular back yard (30x40 feet), two cameras in opposing far corners angled across the yard provide overlapping coverage with no blind spots. Each camera should cover roughly 120-150 degrees of the yard.

Alternatively, a single pan-and-tilt camera mounted high (10-12 feet) on the back of the house provides full yard coverage remotely, but requires active monitoring to be useful — it won't be pointing in the right direction when motion is detected unless it has automatic tracking.

Side yards leading from front to back are often overlooked. A camera mounted at the transition point (fence gate or house corner) covers this common approach route.

Indoor Camera Placement

Interior cameras serve monitoring purposes rather than intrusion detection. Primary locations: main living area (corners provide widest field of view), baby's room or child play area, home office if valuable equipment is stored there.

Mount interior cameras in upper corners of rooms, angling down. A camera in a corner at 7-8 feet high with a wide 130-degree angle can cover most of a standard living room. Avoid mounting on walls facing windows — backlighting from windows makes subjects appear as silhouettes.

Privacy zones: Most camera apps allow drawing privacy zones that are excluded from recording. For indoor cameras where bedrooms or bathrooms are partially visible, configure privacy zones to block those areas from recording while maintaining coverage of the intended area.

Camera Height Reference Guide

4-5 feet: Doorbell camera height. Good for face capture at close range (within 8 feet of door). Eye-level with most visitors.

7-9 feet: Optimal height for exterior cameras. High enough to be tamper-resistant, low enough to capture useful facial detail at standard driveway and approach distances.

10-12 feet: Eave-level mounting. Provides wide coverage of large areas (back yards, parking lots). Less useful for close-up identification. Best for perimeter detection.

12+ feet: Roofline mounting. Maximum coverage area but very limited identification capability. Use for broad motion detection over large properties only.

Night Vision Optimization

Camera placement at night is governed by different factors than daytime. IR night vision illuminates a cone in front of the camera to about 30-100 feet (depending on the camera). Objects within this cone appear in black-and-white. Objects outside the IR cone are invisible.

Avoid placing cameras where they aim toward bright lights (streetlights, neighbor's porch lights) — the camera's automatic exposure adjusts for the bright light, making the darker foreground areas underexposed. Aim the camera so that any bright background light is outside the frame.

Adding external lighting (motion-activated floodlights) dramatically improves camera performance. Cameras designed for color night vision (Arlo Pro 5S, Ring Stick Up Cam Pro, Wyze Cam Floodlight Pro) activate spotlights on motion and capture color footage — far superior for face identification than IR-only cameras in dark environments.

How Many Cameras Do You Need?

Standard setup (4 cameras): Front door, back door, garage, and one corner camera covering a side yard. Covers approximately 80% of entry points for a typical home. Total cost with Wyze Cam v4: $140.
